14 May 1954] H. B. ADAMS, Broker and Dealer Died Sunday Services for
H. B. Adams, fruit and vegetable broker and produce dealer, were
held Monday at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. L. H. Hatcher,
pastor, and the Rev. W. L. Underwood officiated. Burial was in the
Trezevant Cemetery Mr. Adams, who was 65, died at the
Jackson-Madison County General Hospital at Jackson early Sunday
after a lingering illness. He was born at Trezevant where he began
operating a produce business in 1914. He moved to McKenzie and
opened a branch of the business in 1924 and resided here until his
death. At one time he was a partner of F. M. Herron of Bells, Tenn.,
In operating 17 branch offices of his fruit and vegetable brokerage
and produce business with headquarters at Humboldt. He was a member
of the Baptist Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Irene Holmes Adams;
two daughters, Mrs. Louise Sparks and Miss Jane Adams of McKenzie; a
brother, Ben Adams of Cincinnati, and four sisters, Mrs. Lula Mae
Mitchell of Cincinnati, Mrs. Alice Fry of Covington, Ky., Miss Clara
Adams of Union City, and Mrs. Ruby French of Gleason.

The Rev. Adams
Buried Here Last Saturday Funeral services were held from the First
Methodist Church here last Saturday for the Rev. W. W. Adams,
superannuated Methodist minister who died at Webb City, Mo., last
Wednesday following an illness of two years. Services were conducted
by the pastor of the church, the Rev. Wayne A. Lamb, assisted by the
Rev. A. N. Walker. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Born on a farm
near Lexington, Tenn., more than 82 years ago, he was christened
William Watson Adams, but throughout his life was known as W. W.,
Few close friends knowing what the initials stood for. He was
admitted into the Memphis Conference the same day his father the
late Rev. S. B. Adams, retired. He was admitted into the ministry at
the First Methodist Church, Memphis, November 14, 1884. He held some
of the best pastorates in the Conference and for three years was
district superintendent of the Lexington District of which the
McKenzie churches are a part. He retired as pastor of the Chelsea
Avenue Church, a post he had held for five years in 1937. His wife
the former Miss Marie Witt preceded him in death having passed away
in 1939 after 52 years of married life. Following her death he sold
his home in Memphis and went to Springfield, Mo., to make his home
with his son, Frank W. Adams, until he entered the hospital at Webb
City two years ago. The Rev. Adams was a brother-in-law of Mrs.
Nettie Chandler of McKenzie.
ADEN, JOE A
Child Dies Joe, the 6-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harve Aden,
of the 3d. District, died Monday of last week after suffering about
two weeks with meningitis. The death was a sad blow to the family
which had become very much attached to the child. The burial
occurred in the Pilgrim Rest cemetery and the bereaved family has
the sympathy of the community.

Before 1928-Penick Funeral Home] Mrs. John B. Aden An Estimable
Woman Died After Long Illness Mrs. Aden, wife of John B. Aden, of
the 3d. District, died last Friday night at 12 o’clock.
Mrs. Aden had been sick for nearly two months and for some time
bebore she died was in such a very critical condition that but
little hope of her recovery was entertained. Her death was caused
from a complication of diseases. The deceased was about 42 years
old, a member of the Methodist church and was a most excellent
Christian woman. She was a devoted companion and mother and her
death is a sad blow to the family and a loss to the community. She
is survived by her husband and ten children, some of them very
small, and the bereaved family has the heartfelt sympathy of the
entire community. The burial occurred Saturday at the Blooming Grove
cemetery after funeral services by Rev. J. H. Witt. The Democrat
joins friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved one. -Carroll

27 Mar 1946-Brummitt Funeral Home] Funeral Thursday 2 P.M. in
McKenzie For Tom B. Aden Tom B. Aden of McKenzie, who has been an
invalid for a long time and in a critical condition for several
weeks, died at his home Wednesday, March 27th at 12:45 p.m. Mr. Aden
was a substantial Christian citizen who will be missed in his
community. He was 66 years of age, and a veteran of the
Spanish-American war. He was a Methodist and a retired merchant,
having operated a store in Christmasville community in his earlier
years, and later a wholesale grocery in McKenzie. He also operated a
variety store in McKenzie and one at Greenfield. He had been a
steward in the Methodist church for 46 years. Funeral services are
being conducted at the McKenzie Methodist Church Thursday afternoon
at 2 o’clock
by the pastor, Rev. Raymond Council, and a former pastor, Rev. Wayne
Lamb. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mamie McCracken Aden; two
daughters, Shelia Aden, a teacher in the Whitehaven Schools, and
Mrs. B. B. Barnes of Bells. Two sons, Rev. W. C. Aden of Trinity
Methodist Church, Memphis and Tom Aden, Jr. with the Associated
Press, Denver, Colorado, all of whom were at their father’s
bedside. Also surviving is a brother, Will Aden of Paris; and two
sisters, Mrs. Ed Higgins and Mrs. Arch Higgins, both of
Hopkinsville, Ky. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McKenzie,
Penick & Brummitt in charge.
AKINS, BUD Bud
Akins Dead Bud Akins, of the fifteenth district of Weakley county,
died Wednesday morning of pneumonia after an illness of a few days.
The de ceased was about 45 years old and leaves a wife and four
children. Mr. Akins was a clever man and had a host of friends to
mourn his death. His remains were brought to the third district of
this county yesterday and buried at the Concord cemetery. The
community sympathizes with the bereaved in their loss.
AKINS, ROBERT H.
Robert H. Akins passed away at his home in the New Hope community
Monday afternoon at 1:30. He was born in Weakley County and was 79
years of age. He was a member of the New Hope Presbyterian Church
for many years. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Howard, a
Mortician of Jamaica, N. Y., and Theron, stationed at the Army Air
Base at Smyrna. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2
o’clock
by Rev. Geo. L. Johnson. Burial was in the cemetery nearby.

23 Jun 1946-Brummitt Funeral Home] Funeral Thursday for Robt. H.
Akin Former Resident Funeral services conducted by Rev. Raymond
Council, were held Thursday afternoon at five o’clock
at the Methodist Church for Robert Howard Akins, age 40, the son of
Mrs. Bess McClure and the late Robert H. Akins. Mr. Akins died
Sunday morning June 23, 1946 in Jamica Hospital, Jamaica, N. Y.,
Where he was a patient for 9 weeks suffering from a heart ailment.
After funeral services were held in the Chapel at Fairchild’s
Morticians Monday evening the body, accompanied by his wife and
brother, Theron Akins, and Mr. William H. Anderson of New York, was
brought by train to McKenzie Wednesday evening and was taken to Mr.
Akins cousins, the Berryhill-Dye home on Elm Street. Mr. Akins was
born in Weakley County, August 27, 1905. He received his education
in McKenzie High School and Bethel College where he actively
participated in athletics. He is remembered here for his outstanding
achievements in baseball, football and track. In 1932 Mr. Akins
moved to Jamaica, New York and became associated with Fairchilds
Morticians where he was employed as a funeral director. In 1935 he
was married to Miss Mildred Gregson of Paris, daughter of Mr. And
Mrs. Henry I. Gregson. He was an active member of the Jamaica
Presbyterian Church and was also a Mason. Active pall bearers were
Charles McClure, Fred Bomar, Frank Kelly, Marvin Walker, Buck Duke
Wright, Billy McCracken, Paul Holland, and Woodrow Kennon. Honorary
were Charlie Penick, Joe Penick. Hugh Brooks, Paul Mikel and Roe
Travis. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mildred Gresgon Akins,
his mother, Mrs. Bess McClure Akins and his brother W. Theron Akins
of Springfield. Those attending the funeral services from
out-of-town were Mr. William H Anderson of New York, Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Langford of Waynesboro, Mrs. W. Theron Akins of Springfield,
Mrs. E. K. Reagin of Knoxville, Miss Hazel Holland of New York City,
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Wiley Mrs. Morgan Tatum, Miss Nelle Berryhill of
Milan, Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Hopper and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mikel of
Atwood, Mrs. Mary Holland Womack of Big Sandy, Mr. and Mrs. W. W.
Phillips and son, Allmon of Gleason, Mrs. Chas. Walpole of Memphis,
Mr. Hugh Brooks of Trenton, Dr. G. H. Berryhill of Jackson, Mrs. J.
Taylor, and Mr. and Mrs. Travis Taylor of Greenfield, Mrs. Henry I.
Gregson, Mrs. Esco Clifford, Mrs. Foster Brown, Misses Emily Warren
and Mary Beth Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Winford Mr. and Mrs. Ralph

F. Albright. Splendid Citizen of the Trezevant Community Dead.
George F. Albright, a most excellent citizen of the Trezevant
community, died last Saturday night after an illness of only a few
days with pneumonia. His death came as a great surprise and a source
of regret to his many friends and relatives. The deceased was 44
years old, a member of the Christian church and a man highly
esteemed for his many qualities of worth. He leaves a wife and five
children who have the sympathy of the community. The burial occurred
Sunday at the Oak Grove cemetery, the burial services being
conducted by Charlie O’Neill.

19 Sep 1949-Brummitt Funeral Home] Dr, Alexander, Beloved Physician
Dies at Home Here Services for Dr. E. M. Alexander, who died at his
home on Magnolia Street, Monday night, after an illness of several
months were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at
2:30. Rev. Paul Lyles, Rev. W. G. Nall and Rev. E. R. Ramer
officiating. He was affectionately known by his many patients and
friends for the past 49 years, had served McKenzie and vicinity as
one of the best loved and outstanding physicians. He was born in
Weakley County in the Blooming Grove community, the son of the late
S. P. and Emily Wray Alexander, both prominent families of that
community. One sister, Mrs. Oscar Black of Nashville is the only
survivor of the family of ten children. He was graduated from
University of Tennessee School of Medicine in 1901. For several
months he was associated with Dr. A. D. Berryhill in his community,
in 1904 he was married to Miss Lillis McElroy of Center Point,
Texas. For 30 years he was associated with his brother, the late Dr.
Harry Alexander. When his health failed four years ago, he moved his
office to his home where he did a restrict ed practice and in April
of ‘49
health forced him to retire altogether. For 44 years of active
practice he was either an officer or member of the city Health
Department. He was a member of All Medical Societies, thus keeping
informed on all late methods of his profession. He was a member of
the Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, four children, Lloyd
Alexander, Cleveland Heights, Ohio; William Alexander, Winnetka,
Illinois; Mrs. Roy Meeker, Alliance, Ohio; James Alexander, McKenzie
and five grandchildren. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Brummitt
Funeral Home in charge.
ALEXANDER, MRS. S. P. Mrs.
Alexander Dead. Mrs. Alexander, of McKenzie, widow of the late S. P.
Alexander, died suddenly Wednesday night of last week at the home of
Robert W. Green, in the Third district. Mrs. Alexander was in
reasonably good health, was attending the protracted meeting at
Blooming Grove, and had gone [to] Mr. Green’s
to spend the night. When members of the family went to her room
Thursday morning to awake her for breakfast she was found to be
dead, having quietly passed away some time during the night. Mrs.
Alexander was a most excellent Christian woman and very highly
esteemed by those who knew her. She leaves four children and a host
of friends to mourn her death. The burial occurred at Blooming
Grove.
ALLEN, MAGGIE Mrs.
Maggie Allen Mrs. Maggie Allen, wife of John Allen, died at her home
near Hinkledale last Saturday. Her death came after a long illness
from a complication of diseases. She was about 26 years old, a
member of the Christian church and was highly esteemed by a large
number of friends. She is survived by her husband and three small
children. The burial occurred last Sunday at Pleasant Hill, in the
Eighth district near where she was reared, after appropriate burial
services conducted by Harve Blair. A number of sympathizing friends
attended the burial.
ARGO, ANNA K. Funeral
Held In Trezevant for Mrs. Anna K. Argo Funeral services were held
Sunday afternoon at two o’clock
for Mrs. Annie Argo, age 76, at the Baptist church, with the Rev. B.
L. Flowers officiating. Mrs. Argo, wife of Issac Argo died Friday
morning at 11:05 at the Doctors’
Hospital in Milan after a short illness. Besides her husband, she
leaves two sons: E. L. Brooks, E. E. Brooks, two daughters: Mrs.
Lola Smith and Mrs. Jimmy McCuller, all of Memphis, two grandsons:
James E. and D. Brooks McCuller of Jackson, Miss. Mrs. Argo was
first married to Carroll T. Brooks in Sumner County, but moved to
Trezevant soon after Mr. Brooks died in 1905. Mr. and Mrs. Argo were
married 35 years and have always lived in Trezevant. Mrs. Argo was
an active member of the Baptist Church, a Sunday School teacher, a
member of the WMS and the WCTU where she always served willingly.
She lived a long and useful life and will be greatly missed in the
community.

E. Argo 82-Year old Resident of Trezevant Dies After Long Illness
Trezevant, Tenn. April 2.Emmerson E. Argo, 82, died here at the home
of his son, Elmer Argo, early Saturday after a long illness. Mr.
Argo was born here and was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church. He was a sawmill operator. Services were held at Pleasant
Green Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Holly Leaf, west of
Trezevant, Sunday. Burial was in Pleasant Green Cemetery. He leaves
four daughters, Mrs. W. M. Reed Trezevant; Mrs. Melvin Ray, Jackson,
Mich.; Mrs. Jeff White, McKenzie, and Mrs. Elsie Harder, St. Louis;
three sons, Dave Argo, McKenzie; Hesker Argo, Milan, and Elmer Argo,
Trezevant; two sisters, Mrs. Clark Johns and Mrs. Tom Williamson of
Gibson County, and a brother, Tom Argo, Halls, Tenn.

18 Nov 1943-Penick Funeral Home] Miss Mattie Austin Died At Her Home
Here November 18 At her home on Main Street, last Thursday night,
Miss Mattie Austin passed away, after an extended illness. She was
the daughter of the late N. W. and Matilda Austin and was born Nov.
12, 1870, in McKenzie. She was a consistent member of the Methodist
Church, an habitual attendant of its services until her health
failed. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church with the
pastor, the Rev. Wayne A. Lamb, officiating Friday afternoon. Burial
in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Lucian
Anderson, of Paris, and several great-nieces and nephews.

20 Jan 1950-Brummitt Funeral Home] Former Resident Dies In St. Louis
Services for Roy L. Austin, who died of a throat infection Friday
night at his home in St. Louis, were held Monday afternoon at 2:00
at the Presbyterian Church U. S. A. The Rev. Walter Miekley, pastor
of the Baptist Church officiated. Burial at Mount Olive
Cemetery with Brummitt Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Austin, who was
73, was the son of the late Huse and Hattie Pate Austin, residents
of McKenzie for many years. In 1920, he left McKenzie and became
connected with the N. C. & St. L. Railroad. For the past 10
years he was employed by Blackwell Wielandy Wholesale Co. of St.
Louis. He was a Baptist. He leaves his wife Mrs. Pearl Cross Austin;
one son, Bob Austin of Des Moines, Iowa; three daughters, Mrs. Bill
Crompton of Nashville, Mrs. Carroll Westbrook of Des Moines, and
Miss Ann Roy Austin of St. Louis, and one brother, R. C. Austin of
Huntingdon, Tenn.

19 Aug 1954-Brummitt Funeral Home] Mrs. Elige Aylor Rites for
Tennessean Will Be Held Today McKenzie, Tenn., Aug. 19 Services for
Mrs. Alice Anderson Aylor of the Everett’s
Chapel community will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon at the
Everett’s
Chapel Church with the Rev. E. A. Phillips of Jackson officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery with Brummitt Funeral Home in
charge. Mrs. Aylor, who was 64, died at her home at 5:30 Thursday
morning. She had been ill 10 days. She was the wife of Elige Aylor,
a farmer. She was a Methodist. She leaves her husband: a daughter,
Mrs. Marie Kennon of McKenzie; a brother, David Anderson; a sister,
Mrs. Mae Shaw of Lansing, Mich.; two grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren.
AYLOR, GEORGE HENRY

15 Mar 1952-Brummitt Funeral Home] Dock Aylor Dies Of Heart Attack
Friday Night Services for George Henry (Dock) Aylor, 54, who died of
a heart attack Friday night, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Everett’s
Chapel. The Rev. R. J. Cooper, Cayce Pentecost and Bro. Nanny
officiated. Burial in the church cemetery with Brummitt Funeral Home
in charge. Mr. Aylor was married to Cecil Virginia Sherrod in 1919,
and to this union four children were born. One child, Clarence, was
drowned in 1941. The three other children, Walter, Allie Mae and
Josie, and his wife survive. Mr. Aylor had suffered from heart
trouble for a number of years, but was still able to work. He died
suddenly shortly after midnight, Friday night. Other survivors
include his father, three grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Mary
Arnold and Mrs. Pauline Perkins. |
